Elizabeth “Betsy” Cain

Abstract painter Elizabeth “Betsy” Cain (1949) received her BFA in 1972 and MFA in 1976 from the University of Alabama, in Tuscaloosa where she was born. She also studied at Auburn University, Alabama, from 1967-69 and the Instituto Allende, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, in 1970-71. After her RAiR residency Betsy moved to Savannah, Georgia, where she maintained an independent studio practice. Betsy has an extensive exhibition record statewide and nationally, including over a dozen solo exhibitions and thirty group exhibitions. Her work is in the public collections of the Telfair Museum of Art, Savannah, Georgia and the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, Georgia. Betsy won the Governor’s Award for Georgia Women in the Visual Arts in 1997. Betsy’s paintings, cut-outs and works on paper are abstractions with a figurative undertone influenced by the body and landscapes, particularly the low country of the Georgia coast.
