Gregory Kitterle
Gregory Kitterle (b. 1954) attended the Montserrat School of Visual Art in Beverly, Massachusetts in 1972-73. After his RAiR residency, Gregory Kitterle returned to the Boston area and taught for several years at Montserrat College of Art as well as the Fuller Museum. He was involved in the development of open studio weekends in Boston’s South End and Fort Point neighborhoods. Since returning to the Northeast, Greg received several grants for his paintings and drawings, including the Artist Resource Trust Grant from the Berkshire Taconic Foundation in 2009 for surface irregularities' influence on the development of a narrative.
“I can best describe what I do in my paintings with this riddle:
There is a man. He is in a field running home, when he sees another man in front of him wearing a mask holding a dreaded object. Seeing this
he turns around and runs back from where he came.
Tell me precisely what’s going on.
I’ll give you a hint—red socks.
Now if you are a baseball fan the story connects as—ah, it’s ball game. It’s the “ah” of statement that I desire for my paintings to have when the viewer looks at the work and then at the title or vise versa. By this method I can take issues that could be confrontational and redefine them to have a folktale-like perspective. This allows me to make my point of view in what I hope is a simple non-threatening fashion; which hopefully inspires thought.”
