These paintings reflect a New Englander's astonished reactions to the phenomenon of daily life in New Mexico. The work expresses moments from exploration of Bitter Lake, Carlsbad Caverns, Ghost Ranch, and the Hondo Valley, and also more intimate motifs found closer to home: spider webs and tumbleweeds, the pale colors of grass and scrub, and the drama of the sky. I attempt to allow my day-to-day experience influence the work with equal regard for the elegant and the ordinary. Whether it is the hallucinatory landscape, the desert flora and fauna, or the rows of tantalizing craft supplies at Hobby Lobby, I allow things glimpsed and sensed to become part of the language of the painting. Then in the studio I assemble disparate shapes, lines and colors in an attempt to tell the tale of a tourist in a foreign land--spellbound.
