John Sparagana

Born in Rochester, New York, John Sparagana (1958- ) received his MFA from Stanford University in 1987. He is the Grace Christian Vietti Chair of Visual Arts at Rice Universityas well as a Professor of Painting and Drawing. Between 1999 and 2017, John participated in 18 solo exhibitions and over 55 group shows in the United States and Europe. Recent solo exhibitions include ‘John Sparagana’ at the Susanne Vielmetter Projects in Los Angeles, ‘Themesong Variations’ at Corbett vs Dempsey in Chicago, and ‘Breather’ at the Sicardi Gallery in Houston. Recent group exhibitions include ‘Albert Oehlen/John Sparagana’ at the Studiolo in Zürich, Switzerland; ‘Without you I am nothing’ at Heldart in Berlin, Germany, curated by Arturo Herrera; and ‘Utopia/Dystopia: Construction and Destruction in Photography and Collage’ at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. His awards include two Individual Artist Grants from the Cultural Arts Council of Houston, Texas. His work is held in the public collections of, amongst others, the Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois and Kunsthalle Bielefeld, Germany.
