RAiR | 1987-88

Lisa Allen

Lisa Allen (1955- ) was born in Peking, Illinois and graduated from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana with a degree in painting in 1977 and in lithography in 1979. She lived in Chicago for two years before moving to Portland, Maine, to teach at Maine College of Art for the next eight years.  At the end of that period of time she was given the opportunity to participate in two RAiR grants which were pivotal for her work, primarily because of the influence of the New Mexico landscape and the chance to work in an uninterrupted environment. In her painting practice, she looks for organic structure with power and presence and works through many layers of paint to achieve this quality. She has exhibited in Maine, New York, Chile, North Carolina, Arizona, Maryland and Chicago as well as New Mexico. Her work is in the public collections of, amongst others, the Portland Museum of Art, Maine and the Texas Fine Arts Association, Austin.
