Max Cole
Max Cole (1937- ) was born in an old country farmhouse in Hodgeman County, Kansas. She received a BA from Fort Hays State University in 1961 and an MFA from the University of Arizona in 1964. Max developed as an artist in Los Angeles from 1964–78, began showing at Sidney Janis Gallery in New York City in 1977, and lived in Manhattan, New York until 2002. She also maintained a studio in Germany, exhibiting in Europe from the 1980s up until 2017. Later, she returned to California and, as of 2019, to northern New Mexico. Her work is contained in major collections in the United States and internationally, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Panza di Biumo Collection in Italy, and the Vatican Museum’s Contemporary Art Collection in Vatican City. Max has received several prestigious grants and fellowships from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation and The National Endowment for the Arts, among other institutions. In 2009, she participated in the historic Artist’s Meeting with the Pope in Vatican City. Her book “Max Cole: Works 1970-2018” documents five decades of her work which includes over 75 solo exhibitions and 125 group shows in the United States and internationally.
