Philip Denker | Las Vages, Nevada

Philip Denker is originally from Missouri and received his BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2002. His work was featured in New American Paintings #90, and his recent solo exhibitions have been at the Trifecta Gallery and the Winchester Cultural Center, both in Las Vegas, Nevada. He has shown in group exhibitions at the Contemporary Arts Center in Las Vegas and Circuit 12 Contemporary in Dallas. He attended the Bullseye Glass residency in Portland, Oregon, in 2016. Currently, his work tends to bounce back and forth between a sterile, digital aesthetic and the familiarity and sensitivity of more traditional practices. Precision and controlled accidents, obsessive manual repetition and multiplying glitches, the results of a process that occasionally breaks down in execution to yield errors in the code. He appreciates both the speed and consistency of the computer and also the handmade with its tendencies for human mistakes.

Philip currently lives in Ft. Worth, TX

Currently, my work tends to bounce back and forth between a sterile, digital aesthetic and the familiarity and sensitivity of more traditional practices. I appreciate both the speed and consistency of the computer and also, the hand made with its tendencies for human error.  My work is based on complex structures, beginning with a simple  algorithm.  The hand made progression allows for the development of twitches and errors within a complex and methodical pattern. Both ideas can be seen digitally and of the traditional craft such as rug-making, basket weaving, quilting and the like. I view these works as tapestries playing off nostalgic concepts while incorporating new, inventive ways of making through digital conformity.
