Stephen Fleming
Raised by nomadic scientist in the Southwest and California, Fleming attended the Santa Barbara Art Institute before traveling to Europe to study at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and going on to receive a Certificate in Painting from the Royal Academy of Arts, in London and winning the Landseer Prize for Landscape. He returned to California and earned his MFA from the University of California, Davis, with honors. In 1987 he was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts Individual Fellowship then taught at the Kansas City Art Institute before taking the position of Director at the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program in 1994. Stephen retired in 2019 after 25 years at RAiR, but stayed in Roswell where he continues to paint in a renovated house-studio that he designed himself...just down the road from the RAiR facility. Stephen held about twenty solo exhibitions and participated in over forty group exhibitions. His work is in the public collections of, amongst others, the Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento and the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute, Utica, New York.
