Stewart MacFarlane

Figurative painter Stewart MacFarlane (1953- ) was born in Adelaide, South Australia. In 1974 he graduated with a Diploma in Fine Art from the South Australian School of Art, then left for New York City to study at the School of Visual Arts, where he earned his BFA in Painting in 1977. Stewart's first solo exhibition took place in New York City in 1979 at the Razor Gallery. By 2018, he held over seventy solo exhibitions in Australia, Germany, Malaysia and the United States. Stewart worked for major American figurative painters Alex Katz, Janet Fish and Chuck Close. He was awarded residencies to, amongst others, the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Massachusetts and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Maine. His work is in the public collections of over fifteen arts organizations including the Australian National Gallery, Canberra, the Provincetown Museum and Art Center, Massachusetts and the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Perth.
