Wook-Kyung Choi
Painter Wook-Kyung Choi (1940-1985) was born in Seoul, South Korea. She graduated with a BFA in 1963 from the Seoul National University and attained her MFA in 1965 from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. In 1966, she also studied at the Brooklyn Museum School of Art in New York and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine. She became a permanent resident of the United States and taught at, and exhibited in, Amsterdam, Netherlands; Seoul, South Korea and the Atlanta College of Art in Georgia. Considered a pioneer of Korean Abstract Expressionism, she died in South Korea at the age of 45. A retrospective exhibition of Wook-Kyung’s work was held at the Kukje Gallery in Seoul in 2016.
