Yoshiko Kanai

Japanese-born sculptor and installation artist Yoshiko Kanai (1963- ) gained her BA in Design in 1982 and her MFA in 1984, both from the Tama Art University, Tokyo, Japan. She continued her postgraduate studies in the USA at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Maine in 1996 and based herself in New York for decades. Her residencies include the John-Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, and The Artists’ Work Program at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin. She has also been awarded numerous fellowships, including the Asian Cultural Council Fellowship, MoMA P.S.1 International Studio Program in New York; Bamboo Curtain Studio Program in Taipei, Taiwan; New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship; and a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Fellowship. Between 1994 and 2011 Yoshiko participated in about 25 exhibitions. By 2017 Yoshiko had returned to live and work in Yugawara, Japan while still continuing to exhibit in New York City, namely at the Agora Gallery.
