What is the story behind Eric Snell’s Shadow Painting #1 ?

Eric Snell arrived at RAiR in 1999 from Guernsey, part of the Channel Islands of Great Britain, and proceeded to set things afire during his year in Roswell! After levitating and lighting a table (see exhibition brochure cover photo, right), Eric traced the shape of its shadow and made that the shape of his stretcher bar. The deep black color of Shadow Painting #1 is actually the carbon derived from Eric burning the table, which he mixed with linseed oil to stick to the canvas surface. Eric explains, "I wish to suggest that the object in effect still exists, and that it has just been transformed into another energy - transformed from Reality into Abstraction."
